Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
The Unreal Engine, as used in DeusEx 1.112fm and earlier, Devastation 390 and earlier, Mobile Forces 20000 and earlier, Nerf Arena Blast 1.2 and earlier, Postal 2 1337 and earlier, Rune 107 and earlier, Tactical Ops 3.4.0 and earlier, Unreal 1 226f and earlier, Unreal II XMP 7710 and earlier, Unreal Tournament 451b and earlier, Unreal Tournament 2003 2225 and earlier, Unreal Tournament 2004 before 3236, Wheel of Time 333b and earlier, and X-com Enforcer, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a UDP packet containing a secure query with a long value, which overwrites memory.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Recommended fix High confidence

Unreal Tournament 2004: version 3236 or later; Other titles: contact respective vendors for patched releases

  1. 1. Identify which Unreal Engine-based game/server is affected from the deployment
  2. 2. For Unreal Tournament 2004, upgrade to version 3236 or later which contains the security fix
  3. 3. For other affected titles (DeusEx, Devastation, Rune, Tactical Ops, etc.), contact the respective game vendors for patched versions
  4. 4. If no patched version is available from the vendor, discontinue use of the affected software
  5. 5. As a temporary mitigation, block UDP port 7777 (the standard Unreal Engine query port) at the network perimeter to prevent external attackers from sending malicious packets
  6. 6. Do not expose affected game servers directly to the internet
Caveat Very old software from 2004 era - no longer maintained by vendors; some games may have no patched version available
