Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
Multiple vulnerabilities in libXpm for 6.8.1 and earlier, as used in XFree86 and other packages, include (1) multiple integer overflows, (2) out-of-bounds memory accesses, (3) directory traversal, (4) shell metacharacter, (5) endless loops, and (6) memory leaks, which could allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information, cause a denial of service (application crash), or execute arbitrary code via a certain XPM image file. NOTE: it is highly likely that this candidate will be SPLIT into other candidates in the future, per CVE's content decisions.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Recommended fix High confidence

X11R6.8.2 or later (libXpm 6.8.2 or later); or distribution-specific patched packages (e.g., Fedora Core 2/3 updates, Debian packages from DSA-607)

  1. 1. Identify the libXpm library version currently installed (e.g., rpm -q libXpm or dpkg -l libxpm)
  2. 2. For Fedora Core systems, run 'yum update' or 'up2date' to obtain patched packages from Fedora updates
  3. 3. For Debian/Ubuntu systems, run 'apt-get update && apt-get upgrade' to apply Debian DSA-607 patches
  4. 4. For Suse Linux, apply patches via YaST or download from Suse security updates
  5. 5. For X11R6 standalone, upgrade to X11R6.8.2 or later which contains the fixed libXpm
  6. 6. Restart any X11-dependent applications or services after updating the library
  7. 7. Verify the fix by checking the new libXpm version and testing XPM image parsing
Caveat Minimal - this is a security-only fix in the X11 pixmap library with no API/ABI changes expected for most applications
