Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
The pnm_get_chunk function in xine 0.99.2 and earlier, and other packages such as MPlayer that use the same code, does not properly verify that the chunk size is less than the PREAMBLE_SIZE, which causes a read operation with a negative length that leads to a buffer overflow via (1) RMF_TAG, (2) DATA_TAG, (3) PROP_TAG, (4) MDPR_TAG, and (5) CONT_TAG values, a different vulnerability than CVE-2004-1187.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Recommended fix Moderate confidence

Upgrade to xine-lib 1.0+ and MPlayer 1.0+ (the vulnerability was fixed in versions after 0.99.2)

  1. 1. Identify the affected package in your environment: xine-lib, xine, or MPlayer (all use the vulnerable pnm_get_chunk function)
  2. 2. For systems with MPlayer 0.90, 0.90_pre, 0.90_rc, or 0.90_rc4: upgrade to MPlayer 1.0 or later which contains the fixed xine-lib code
  3. 3. For systems with xine-lib 0.9.8, 0.9.13, 0.99, or 1_alpha: upgrade to xine-lib 1.0 or later
  4. 4. For systems with xine 0.9.8, 0.9.13, 0.9.18, or 1_alpha: upgrade to xine 1.0 or later
  5. 5. For Mandrake Linux 10.0 and 10.1: apply vendor security updates or upgrade the distribution as this is an end-of-life version
  6. 6. After upgrade, verify the pnm_get_chunk function handles chunk size validation correctly by testing playback of PNM media files
Caveat These are very old software versions from 2004; upgrading to modern versions may require changes to dependent configurations or media assets, but the security benefit far outweighs compatibility concerns
