IBM WebSphere Application Server 6.1 or later (5.x is end-of-life and unsupported)

  1. 1. Identify all WebSphere Application Server installations matching affected versions (5.0.0, 5.0.1, 5.0.2, 5.1.0, and related earlier versions).
  2. 2. Search filesystem for addNode.log files and verify if they contain plaintext credentials.
  3. 3. If addNode.log files exist with credentials, treat them as compromised: change all credentials that may have been logged.
  4. 4. Review and secure file permissions on WebSphere log directories to prevent unauthorized access.
  5. 5. Audit system for any unauthorized access or privilege escalation since the vulnerability was present.
  6. 6. Because WebSphere 5.x is end-of-life with no available vendor patch, plan migration to a supported IBM WebSphere version (6.1+ or later).
  7. 7. If migration is not immediately possible, implement compensating controls: restrict physical and network access to servers, monitor log file access, and use separate privileged accounts for addNode operations.
