NVD · uneditedThe slap_modrdn2mods function in modrdn.c in OpenLDAP 2.4.22 does not check the return value of a call to the smr_normalize function, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (segmentation fault) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a modrdn call with an RDN string containing invalid UTF-8 sequences, which triggers a free of an invalid, uninitialized pointer in the slap_mods_free function, as demonstrated using the Codenomicon LDAPv3 test suite.

- 1. Identify the OpenLDAP installation version by running 'slapd -V' or checking the package manager
- 2. For systems running OpenLDAP 2.4.22, upgrade to OpenLDAP 2.4.23 or later (e.g., 2.4.24) which contains the fix for the smr_normalize return value check
- 3. For VMware ESXi 4.0/4.1, apply the respective VMware security patches for this CVE
- 4. For Mac OS X 10.6.0-10.6.4, upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.5 or later which includes the fixed OpenLDAP version
- 5. For OpenSUSE 11.0, apply the openSUSE security update for this issue
- 6. After upgrading, restart the OpenLDAP service (slapd) to load the fixed library
- 7. Verify the fix by testing LDAP modrdn operations with both valid and invalid UTF-8 input
