Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
It was discovered that the Western Digital My Cloud device before 2.30.196 is affected by an authentication bypass vulnerability. An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this vulnerability to authenticate as an admin user without needing to provide a password, thereby gaining full control of the device. (Whenever an admin logs into My Cloud, a server-side session is created that is bound to the user's IP address. After the session is created, it is possible to call authenticated CGI modules by sending the cookie username=admin in the HTTP request. The invoked CGI will check if a valid session is present and bound to the user's IP address.) It was found that it is possible for an unauthenticated attacker to create a valid session without a login. The network_mgr.cgi CGI module contains a command called "cgi_get_ipv6" that starts an admin session -- tied to the IP address of the user making the request -- if the additional parameter "flag" with the value "1" is provided. Subsequent invocation of commands that would normally require admin privileges now succeed if an attacker sets the username=admin cookie.

How this class of weakness works · CWE-287

The mechanism that verifies who a user is can be side-stepped or fooled, letting an attacker act as someone they're not. Everything built on top of that identity then becomes untrustworthy. Fixing it means hardening the full authentication flow, including edge cases, tokens, and secondary paths.

Firmware version 2.30.196 or later for the affected My Cloud device models

  1. 1. Log into the My Cloud web interface as an administrator
  2. 2. Navigate to Settings > Firmware/Software or look for a Firmware Update section
  3. 3. Check the current firmware version to confirm it is below 2.30.196
  4. 4. Download the firmware version 2.30.196 or later from the official Western Digital support site (support.wdc.com) for your specific device model
  5. 5. In the firmware update section, select the option to upload the firmware file manually or check for and apply any available updates
  6. 6. Wait for the firmware upload and installation to complete - do not power off the device during this process
  7. 7. After the device reboots, log back into the web interface and verify the firmware version shows 2.30.196 or later
  8. 8. As an additional security measure, review admin accounts and look for any unauthorized user accounts that may have been created during any prior exploitation
Caveat Standard firmware upgrade risks apply - ensure backup of critical data and stable power during the update process
