Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
Solidus is a free, open-source ecommerce platform built on Rails. Versions of Solidus prior to 3.1.4, 3.0.4, and 2.11.13 have a denial of service vulnerability that could be exploited during a guest checkout. The regular expression used to validate a guest order's email was subject to exponential backtracking through a fragment like `a.a.` Versions 3.1.4, 3.0.4, and 2.11.13 have been patched to use a different regular expression. The maintainers added a check for email addresses that are no longer valid that will print information about any affected orders that exist. If a prompt upgrade is not an option, a workaround is available. It is possible to edit the file `config/application.rb` manually (with code provided by the maintainers in the GitHub Security Advisory) to check email validity.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Upgrade to Solidus 2.11.13 (for 2.x), 3.0.4 (for 3.0.x), or 3.1.4 (for 3.1.x)

  1. 1. Identify the current Solidus version by checking your Gemfile or gemlock file for the solidus gem version
  2. 2. Determine the appropriate upgrade target based on current version: for 2.x line upgrade to 2.11.13, for 3.0.x upgrade to 3.0.4, for 3.1.x upgrade to 3.1.4
  3. 3. Update the Gemfile to specify the fixed version: gem 'solidus', '~> X.X.X' (replace X.X.X with your target version)
  4. 4. Run bundle update solidus to apply the new version
  5. 5. Run any necessary Solidus migrations: bin/rails db:migrate
  6. 6. Test the guest checkout flow to verify the email validation works correctly
  7. 7. If there is an existing affected email validation issue, the maintainers added a check that will print information about affected orders on startup
Caveat Review Solidus migration notes and any custom extensions for compatibility with the new minor version, as with any framework upgrade
