This allows an attacker with control over Thread Context Map data to cause a denial of service when a crafted string is interpreted. This issue was fixed in Log4j 2.17.0, 2.12.3, and 2.3.1.

Log4j 2.17.0 (or 2.12.3/2.3.1 depending on your baseline branch)
- 1. Identify all instances of Log4j in your environment by scanning for log4j-core*.jar or log4j-api*.jar files
- 2. For each affected Log4j installation, determine the current version (check META-INF/MANIFEST.MF within the JAR file for Implementation-Version)
- 3. If running Log4j 2.0 through 2.3.0: upgrade to Log4j 2.3.1
- 4. If running Log4j 2.4 through 2.12.2: upgrade to Log4j 2.12.3
- 5. If running Log4j 2.13.0 through 2.16.0: upgrade to Log4j 2.17.0 (or latest 2.x stable release)
- 6. Replace the old log4j-core and log4j-api JAR files with the new versions in all application lib directories, WAR files, and nested dependencies
- 7. Restart all applications and services using the updated Log4j libraries
- 8. Verify the upgrade was successful by checking that the application now loads Log4j version 2.17.0, 2.12.3, or 2.3.1
