Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
Twig is an open source template language for PHP. When in a sandbox mode, the `arrow` parameter of the `sort` filter must be a closure to avoid attackers being able to run arbitrary PHP functions. In affected versions this constraint was not properly enforced and could lead to code injection of arbitrary PHP code. Patched versions now disallow calling non Closure in the `sort` filter as is the case for some other filters. Users are advised to upgrade.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

How this class of weakness works · CWE-74

Untrusted input crosses into a downstream interpreter — SQL, a shell, an HTML page, an LDAP query — without being kept separate from the commands around it, so the attacker's data is read as instructions. This is the parent class behind SQL injection, cross-site scripting, and command injection alike. The durable fix is the same everywhere: keep data and code apart at every boundary, using parameterisation or context-aware encoding rather than building interpreted strings by concatenation.

Recommended fix High confidence

Twig 2.14.11 or 3.3.8

  1. Identify the current Twig version in use by checking composer.json or vendor directory
  2. Update composer.json to require Twig version ^2.14.11 for Twig 2.x or ^3.3.8 for Twig 3.x
  3. Run 'composer update twig/twig' to install the patched version
  4. Verify the correct version is installed with 'composer show twig/twig'
  5. If using sandbox mode, verify that the sort filter now properly rejects non-Closure callables for the arrow parameter
Caveat Security fix; minimal risk but test sort filter functionality in sandbox mode after upgrade
