Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
CKEditor4 is an open source what-you-see-is-what-you-get HTML editor. A vulnerability has been discovered in the core HTML processing module and may affect all plugins used by CKEditor 4 prior to version 4.18.0. The vulnerability allows someone to inject malformed HTML bypassing content sanitization, which could result in executing JavaScript code. This problem has been patched in version 4.18.0. There are currently no known workarounds.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

How this class of weakness works · CWE-79

Untrusted input is placed into a web page without being neutralised, so an attacker's markup or script executes in another user's browser. That can hijack sessions, capture keystrokes, or silently perform actions as the victim. Fixing it properly means context-aware output encoding everywhere data meets HTML, backed by a content-security policy as a second line of defence.

General guidance for the cross-site scripting (xss) class — the official description and references above are authoritative for this specific CVE. Want a bespoke review and a reviewed fix? Ask our team →

Recommended fix High confidence

CKEditor 4.18.0 or later (for downstream products, apply vendor security updates that include CKEditor 4.18.0)

  1. 1. Identify all CKEditor 4 installations in your environment that are running versions prior to 4.18.0
  2. 2. For standalone CKEditor 4 installations: download CKEditor 4.18.0 or later from the official repository at https://ckeditor.com/ckeditor-4/
  3. 3. Replace the existing ckeditor.js and core files with the new version 4.18.0 files
  4. 4. If using a package manager (npm, Composer): update the ckeditor4 package to version 4.18.0 or higher
  5. 5. Clear any caching systems that may serve old CKEditor assets
  6. 6. Verify the upgrade by checking the CKEditor version in the admin interface or via the CKEDITOR.version property
  7. 7. Test the editor functionality and confirm HTML sanitization is working correctly
  8. 8. For downstream products using CKEditor (Drupal, Fedora, Application Express, etc.): apply vendor-specific updates that incorporate CKEditor 4.18.0
Caveat The 4.18.0 patch is a maintenance release within the 4.x line; no breaking changes are expected, but full functional testing of the editor is recommended after upgrade
