A flaw was found in the virtio-net device of QEMU. This flaw was inadvertently introduced with the fix for CVE-2021-3748, which forgot to unmap the cached virtqueue elements on error, leading to memory leakage and other unexpected results. Affected QEMU version: 6.2.0.

QEMU 6.2.1 or later stable release (or Debian-packaged version with security fix applied)

  1. 1. Identify the QEMU version currently installed: `qemu-system-x86_64 --version` or `dpkg -l | grep qemu`
  2. 2. Obtain the fixed QEMU version. According to the QEMU release cycle, version 6.2.0 contained this bug. The fix was integrated into later point releases. Check for QEMU 6.2.1 or later, or the latest stable 6.2.x release from https://www.qemu.org/download/
  3. 3. For Debian 11 (bullseye) systems: Run `apt update` followed by `apt install qemu-system-x86` or `apt upgrade` to get the patched version from Debian's security updates
  4. 4. Verify the fix was applied by checking the running QEMU version after update: `qemu-system-x86_64 --version`
  5. 5. If using QEMU in a virtual machine manager (libvirt/KVM), restart any running VMs to ensure they use the updated QEMU binary
