Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
An issue was discovered in libxml2 before 2.10.3. When parsing a multi-gigabyte XML document with the XML_PARSE_HUGE parser option enabled, several integer counters can overflow. This results in an attempt to access an array at a negative 2GB offset, typically leading to a segmentation fault.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

How this class of weakness works · CWE-190

An arithmetic operation produces a value too large for its type and wraps around to an unexpected — often tiny or negative — number. That miscalculated value then drives a memory allocation or a bounds check, opening the door to corruption. The fix is checked arithmetic and validating sizes before they're used.

Recommended fix High confidence

libxml2 >= 2.10.3 (or iPadOS >= 15.7.2 for Apple devices)

  1. 1. Identify the version of libxml2 currently in use by checking your application's dependencies or system libraries
  2. 2. For direct libxml2 usage: upgrade libxml2 to version 2.10.3 or later
  3. 3. For NetApp products (Active Iq Unified Manager, Clustered Data Ontap, Netapp Manageability Sdk, Ontap Select Deploy Administration Utility, Snapmanager): apply vendor-specific patches as provided by NetApp support
  4. 4. For iPadOS devices: upgrade to iPadOS 15.7.2 or later
  5. 5. Rebuild or restart any applications that link against libxml2 to ensure the updated library is loaded
  6. 6. Verify the fix by testing XML parsing with large documents using the XML_PARSE_HUGE parser option
Caveat Minimal risk - this is a bug fix for an integer overflow; upgrading to stable releases is routine. Ensure application compatibility with the new library version before production deployment.
