CVE-2022-43650
Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.
NVD · uneditedThis vulnerability allows remote attackers to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of RARLAB WinRAR 6.11.0.0. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the parsing of ZIP files. Crafted data in a ZIP file can trigger a read past the end of an allocated buffer. An attacker can leverage this in conjunction with other vulnerabilities to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-19232.
Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.
dbcve analysis · moderate confidenceOut-of-bounds read vulnerability in WinRAR 6.11.0.0 when parsing specially crafted ZIP files. The flaw allows remote attackers to read past the end of an allocated buffer, leading to sensitive information disclosure. User interaction is required (opening a malicious ZIP file). The vulnerability can be chained with other flaws for arbitrary code execution.

Am I affected? How to checkSteps we derive from the advisory and the affected-version data, so you can decide whether this CVE reaches your setup. They are a guide, not a scan — your own configuration is the authority.
dbcve checksWork through these to decide whether this CVE applies to you.
-
Check WinRAR version numberOpen WinRAR and navigate to Help > About WinRAR to view the exact version, or right-click the winrar.exe file in the installation folder and select Properties > DetailsAffected if Version displayed is 6.11.0.0 exactly
-
Confirm ZIP file parsing is in useThis vulnerability is triggered when WinRAR opens or previews a ZIP file. The flaw exists in the ZIP parsing routine and does not require any specific WinRAR feature to be enabled beyond normal ZIP file handlingAffected if Users open ZIP files using WinRAR
-
Identify if untrusted ZIP sources existAssess whether users in the environment receive or open ZIP files from untrusted or unknown sources, as user interaction (opening the malicious file) is required for exploitationAffected if Users open ZIP files from untrusted or unknown sources
You are affected if WinRAR version 6.11.0.0 is installed and users open ZIP files from untrusted sources with WinRAR, as the out-of-bounds read occurs during ZIP parsing without additional configuration requirements.

Remediation Closing itWhat it takes to close this. Where a vendor fix exists we point at it; where none exists we say so plainly, and can build one. Effort estimates are scoped from the advisory, not from your codebase.
dbcve · scopedUpdate WinRAR to the latest version that includes the security fix. Avoid opening ZIP files from untrusted sources.
WinRAR 6.12 or later

The advisory tells you what broke. It rarely tells you what actually worked. If you’ve dealt with this one, that detail is what the next engineer is searching for.
- The version that genuinely resolved it — not the one the vendor claimed
- A config change or rule that shut the vector down
- A gotcha in the upgrade path that cost you an afternoon
