Parallels Desktop Updater Improper Initialization Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows local attackers to escalate privileges on affected installations of Parallels Desktop. An attacker must first obtain the ability to execute low-privileged code on the target host system in order to exploit this vulnerability. The specific flaw exists within the Updater service. The issue results from the lack of proper initialization of environment variables. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to escalate privileges and execute arbitrary code in the context of root. . Was ZDI-CAN-18229.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

dbcve analysis · high confidence

Parallels Desktop Updater service lacks proper initialization of environment variables, allowing a local attacker with low-privileged code execution to manipulate environment variables and escalate to root privileges, executing arbitrary code in the context of the root user.

MitigationApply the vendor patch from Parallels when available. Until patched, restrict local access to trusted users and monitor for any suspicious processes interacting with the Updater service.

Verify against the referenced sources before acting — the references below are authoritative for this CVE, this summary is not.

Am I affected? How to checkSteps we derive from the advisory and the affected-version data, so you can decide whether this CVE reaches your setup. They are a guide, not a scan — your own configuration is the authority.

dbcve checks

Work through these to decide whether this CVE applies to you.

  1. Confirm Parallels Desktop installation
Locate the Parallels Desktop application in /Applications or via system_profiler SPApplicationsFolderData
Affected if Parallels Desktop is not present on the system, the vulnerability does not apply
  2. Identify installed Parallels Desktop version
Run ' Parallels Desktop --version' or check the application info via Finder Get Info window
Affected if Version is missing from the output or cannot be determined, manual verification required
  3. Compare version to vulnerability range
Match your installed version against '< 18.1.0_(53311)' - any version lower than 18.1.0 build 53311 is affected
Affected if Installed version is numerically less than 18.1.0_53311 (e.g., 18.0.x, 17.x, 16.x)
  4. Verify Updater service presence
Check for the Parallels Updater daemon or service process (often named 'Parallels Service' or 'prl_') running on the system
Affected if The Updater service is running - the vulnerable code path is active; if disabled, exploitation may not be possible

User is affected if Parallels Desktop is installed with a version below 18.1.0 build 53311 and the Updater service is enabled and running on the system.
