Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
An issue was discovered in libxml2 before 2.11.7 and 2.12.x before 2.12.5. When using the XML Reader interface with DTD validation and XInclude expansion enabled, processing crafted XML documents can lead to an xmlValidatePopElement use-after-free.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

dbcve analysis
How this class of weakness works · CWE-416

Memory is used after it has been freed, so its contents — now potentially attacker-controlled — drive the program's behaviour. With careful heap grooming this becomes code execution. The fix requires disciplined ownership of memory and often a targeted rework of the object lifecycle.

Libxml2 2.11.7 or 2.12.5 (or later stable releases)

  1. Identify the current libxml2 version installed on the system using package manager (e.g., dpkg -l | grep libxml2, rpm -qa | grep libxml2, or xml2 --version)
  2. Update the package repository to ensure latest packages are available
  3. Upgrade libxml2 to version 2.11.7 or higher (for the 2.11.x branch) OR to version 2.12.5 or higher (for the 2.12.x branch)
  4. For Debian/Ubuntu: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install libxml2
  5. For RHEL/CentOS: sudo yum update libxml2
  6. For systems building from source: download libxml2-2.11.7 or libxml2-2.12.5 from gnome.org, configure, make, and install
  7. Verify the upgraded version matches or exceeds the fixed release
Caveat Patch/minor version upgrades typically have no breaking changes; review release notes for any behavioral changes
