Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
Cilium is a networking, observability, and security solution with an eBPF-based dataplane. Users of IPsec transparent encryption in Cilium may be vulnerable to cryptographic attacks that render the transparent encryption ineffective. In particular, Cilium is vulnerable to chosen plaintext, key recovery, replay attacks by a man-in-the-middle attacker. These attacks are possible due to an ESP sequence number collision when multiple nodes are configured with the same key. Fixed versions of Cilium use unique keys for each IPsec tunnel established between nodes, resolving all of the above attacks. This vulnerability is fixed in 1.13.13, 1.14.9, and 1.15.3.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Recommended fix High confidence

Cilium 1.15.3 (or 1.14.9 or 1.13.14 depending on branch)

  1. Backup current Cilium configuration and state
  2. Identify current Cilium version using 'cilium version' or 'kubectl get pods -n kube-system -l k8s-app=cilium -o jsonpath="{.items[0].spec.containers[0].image}"'
  3. Upgrade Cilium to version 1.15.3 (or 1.14.9 for the 1.14 branch, or 1.13.14 for the 1.13 branch) using standard upgrade procedure
  4. For cluster upgrades, follow rolling upgrade procedure: 'cilium upgrade' or use Helm upgrade with appropriate values
  5. After upgrade, verify IPsec is working correctly: 'cilium encrypt status' or check for ESP packets with unique SPI values
  6. Confirm no sequence number collisions occur between nodes
Caveat Standard Cilium upgrade considerations apply - test in staging first, review release notes for between-version changes
