- 1. Identify the current PostgreSQL version of your Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server by checking the server properties in Azure Portal or using Azure CLI: `az postgres flexible-server show --resource-group <rg> --name <server>`
- 2. Determine the appropriate target version based on your current major version (12.x → 12.20, 13.x → 13.16, 14.x → 14.13, 15.x → 15.8)
- 3. Review the server's maintenance window settings and ensure it is configured (Azure Portal → Server → Maintenance)
- 4. Create a point-in-time restore backup of your database before upgrading, using Azure Portal or CLI: `az postgres flexible-server restore --restore-time <time> --source-server <source> --target-server <target> --resource-group <rg>`
