Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
GNOME libsoup before 3.6.1 allows a buffer overflow in applications that perform conversion to UTF-8 in soup_header_parse_param_list_strict. There is a plausible way to reach this remotely via soup_message_headers_get_content_type (e.g., an application may want to retrieve the content type of a request or response).

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

dbcve analysis
How this class of weakness works · CWE-787

The program writes past the bounds of a buffer, overwriting adjacent memory an attacker can turn to their advantage. Crafted input can overwrite control data and redirect execution. Remediation is validating every index and length before a write, plus modern memory-safety mitigations.

General guidance for the out-of-bounds write class — the official description and references above are authoritative for this specific CVE. Want a bespoke review and a reviewed fix? Ask our team →

Recommended fix High confidence

3.6.1

  1. Check the current installed version of libsoup in your environment using your system's package manager or build system
  2. Upgrade libsoup to version 3.6.1 or later
  3. For systems using apt/dpkg: Run 'apt-get update && apt-get install libsoup-3.0-1' or 'apt-get upgrade libsoup-3.0-1'
  4. For systems using yum/dnf: Run 'dnf update libsoup' or 'yum update libsoup'
  5. For systems using pacman: Run 'pacman -Syu libsoup'
  6. For systems using pip/meson: Rebuild and reinstall libsoup 3.6.1 or later from source
  7. After upgrading, rebuild any applications that statically link against libsoup
  8. Verify the new version is 3.6.1 or higher using 'pkg-config --modversion libsoup-3.0' or equivalent
Caveat Minor version upgrade within 3.x series should have minimal breaking changes; however, always review release notes for any API/ABI changes before deploying in production
