Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: nvmet-fc: avoid scheduling association deletion twice When forcefully shutting down a port via the configfs interface, nvmet_port_subsys_drop_link() first calls nvmet_port_del_ctrls() and then nvmet_disable_port(). Both functions will eventually schedule all remaining associations for deletion. The current implementation checks whether an association is about to be removed, but only after the work item has already been scheduled. As a result, it is possible for the first scheduled work item to free all resources, and then for the same work item to be scheduled again for deletion. Because the association list is an RCU list, it is not possible to take a lock and remove the list entry directly, so it cannot be looked up again. Instead, a flag (terminating) must be used to determine whether the association is already in the process of being deleted.

Remediation Closing itWhat it takes to close this. Where a vendor fix exists we point at it; where none exists we say so plainly, and can build one. Effort estimates are scoped from the advisory, not from your codebase.

Recommended fix Moderate confidence

Linux kernel stable release containing the nvmet-fc 'terminating' flag fix (consult kernel.org or your distribution's security advisories for the exact version)

  1. Check your current Linux kernel version using `uname -r` or `cat /proc/version`
  2. Identify the kernel version running the nvmet-fc subsystem (typically enterprise Linux distributions like RHEL, SLES, or Ubuntu with kernel versions in the 5.x-6.x range)
  3. Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version that includes the fix for CVE-2025-40343. The fix adds a 'terminating' flag to prevent double-scheduling of association deletion work items.
  4. After kernel upgrade, reboot the system to load the fixed kernel
  5. Verify the fix is applied by checking the kernel version and reviewing the nvmet-fc module code for the 'terminating' flag implementation
Caveat Kernel upgrades may require system reboot and could introduce compatibility changes with existing modules or hardware drivers
