Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
A critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability was identified in the server-side template rendering mechanism used by the Glassfish gadget handler. The application processes .xml files and evaluates user-supplied values within a context where Expression Language (EL) “expressions” are processed without proper sanitization or escaping. By injecting expressions such as #{7*7}, the server returns 49, confirming server-side EL evaluation. This issue allows a remote attacker to fully compromise the underlying host, enabling capabilities as reading/modifying data, executing arbitrary commands, persistence, and lateral movement. This issue affects Eclipse GlassFish: from 8.0.0 to 8.0.1, fixed in 8.0.2; 7.1.0, fixed in 7.1.1; from 7.0.0 to 7.0.25, fixed in 7.0.26. Impact on versions from 5.1.0 to 6.2.5 is unknown.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Eclipse GlassFish 8.0.2 (or latest stable 7.x if 8.x migration is not feasible)

  1. 1. Identify the current installed version of Eclipse GlassFish by checking the installation directory or startup logs.
  2. 2. For GlassFish 8.0.0-8.0.1: Upgrade to version 8.0.2 from the official Eclipse GlassFish download repository.
  3. 3. For GlassFish 7.1.0: Upgrade to version 7.1.1 from the official Eclipse GlassFish download repository.
  4. 4. For GlassFish 7.0.0-7.0.25: Upgrade to version 7.0.26 from the official Eclipse GlassFish download repository.
  5. 5. For GlassFish versions 5.1.0 to 6.2.5: Consider upgrading to the latest stable version (8.0.2 or latest 7.x) as the impact is unknown; test thoroughly in a non-production environment first.
  6. 6. After upgrade, verify the EL injection vulnerability is no longer exploitable by testing with a benign expression like #{7*7} - it should not be evaluated.
  7. 7. Deploy the upgraded GlassFish instance to production and monitor for any issues.
Caveat Review GlassFish 8.x migration guide for any configuration or API changes from earlier versions; test application compatibility in staging before production deployment
