Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
Integer overflow vulnerability has been found in "builtin.c" program file of gawk (do_sub() routine). This issue could be used to overwrite gawk heap metadata and objects causing the program to crash. It affects 32-bit builds of gawk in versions 5.4.0 and below.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

How this class of weakness works · CWE-190

An arithmetic operation produces a value too large for its type and wraps around to an unexpected — often tiny or negative — number. That miscalculated value then drives a memory allocation or a bounds check, opening the door to corruption. The fix is checked arithmetic and validating sizes before they're used.

gawk > 5.4.0 (the next stable release containing the commit ae1b2d508f46913269a9e62aceda3636afe8147b)

  1. 1. Check the current gawk version installed: gawk --version
  2. 2. Identify if the system is running a 32-bit or 64-bit build (uname -m)
  3. 3. Visit the vendor patch commit to review the fix: https://cgit.git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gawk.git/commit/?id=ae1b2d508f46913269a9e62aceda3636afe8147b
  4. 4. Obtain the latest stable gawk release that includes this fix (version higher than 5.4.0)
  5. 5. Upgrade gawk using the system's package manager (e.g., apt-get update && apt-get install gawk, yum update gawk, or brew upgrade gawk)
  6. 6. Verify the upgraded version: gawk --version
  7. 7. Test critical awk scripts to ensure functionality is preserved
