Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
Prometheus is an open-source monitoring system and time series database. Prior to versions 3.5.3 and 3.11.3, the remote read endpoint (/api/v1/read) does not validate the declared decoded length in a snappy-compressed request body before allocating memory. An unauthenticated attacker can send a small payload that causes a huge heap allocation per request. Under concurrent load this can exhaust available memory and crash the Prometheus process. This issue has been patched in versions 3.5.3 and 3.11.3.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

dbcve analysis
How this class of weakness works · CWE-400

A single request can consume unbounded CPU, memory, or connections, so a modest amount of malicious traffic exhausts the service. The result is denial of service for everyone else. Remediation is enforcing limits, quotas, and timeouts on what any one request can use.

General guidance for the uncontrolled resource consumption class — the official description and references above are authoritative for this specific CVE. Want a bespoke review and a reviewed fix? Ask our team →

Recommended fix High confidence

Upgrade to Prometheus 3.5.3 or 3.11.3 (3.11.3 recommended for most users as it is the latest stable release in the 3.x branch)

  1. Identify the currently running Prometheus version using `prometheus --version` or checking the service
  2. Stop the Prometheus service to prevent data inconsistency during upgrade
  3. Backup Prometheus configuration files (typically in /etc/prometheus/) and data directory
  4. Download the fixed Prometheus release (3.5.3 or 3.11.3) from the official releases page
  5. Extract and replace the Prometheus binary with the new version
  6. Restart the Prometheus service
  7. Verify the new version is running and the /api/v1/read endpoint functions correctly
  8. Monitor system memory usage under load to confirm the memory exhaustion issue is resolved
Caveat Standard minor version upgrade; consult Prometheus release notes if skipping multiple minor versions to check for configuration or feature changes
