Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
SumatraPDF is a multi-format reader for Windows. In 3.6.1 and earlier, a crafted CHM file can supply malformed LZX Huffman code lengths to make_decode_table in ext/CHMLib/lzx.c. In the long-code branch, the function writes new internal nodes through next_symbol before validating that the canonical Huffman table has overflowed. The PRETREE case can write beyond the 104-entry PRETREE_table into adjacent heap state in struct LZXstate when reached through chm_open, chm_retrieve_object, LZXdecompress, and BUILD_TABLE. This produces heap memory corruption in the parser process, while arbitrary code execution has not been demonstrated. No fixed version is available as of this review.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

How this class of weakness works · CWE-119

The program reads or writes outside the bounds of an allocated buffer, corrupting adjacent memory. With crafted input an attacker can overwrite control data and, with effort, redirect execution to their own code. Remediation ranges from bounds checking and safe library functions to compiler mitigations, usually alongside a careful audit of the surrounding code.

Recommended fix Moderate confidence
  1. Obtain the source code from the official SumatraPDF repository
  2. Navigate to the ext/CHMLib/lzx.c file in the codebase
  3. Apply the vendor patch from commit 13b3d4204dd12d93d426f2157b157b149edc29bf, which adds validation to prevent writing beyond the 104-entry PRETREE_table
  4. Recompile SumatraPDF from the patched source code
  5. As an interim mitigation, avoid opening untrusted or unknown CHM files until the patched version is available
