The Flex Objects plugin created a generic API endpoint (FlexApiController::update()) that functions as a privileged shortcut — it accepts requests that bypass the granular, context-specific authorization checks Grav's native Users and Groups controllers enforce. The plugin developer made a reasonable abstraction decision: the generic handler trusts that the caller has already been authorized. That assumption is the trusted subsystem anti-pattern, and it has a documented lineage across ASP.NET, WordPress, and now Grav.

The exploitation requires legitimate credentials with api.access, admin.login, and users.update permissions — standard permissions for a power user or junior admin, not elevated threat actors. An attacker with these permissions can escalate to full super-admin account compromise through two redundant paths: resetting any user's password via the user-accounts endpoint, or modifying group memberships via user-groups to gain administrative privileges. This is not a bug in Grav's permission system; it's a parallel entry point Grav's security model never accounted for.

The 1.4.7 patch likely adds specific guards for password and group fields rather than enforcing context-specific authorization at the controller level. If so, the underlying blast radius remains significant: FlexApiController::update() handles all Flex object types through the same generic handler. The fix may close the demonstrated paths while leaving the architectural vulnerability intact across every other object type the plugin manages. Expect follow-up CVEs if this pattern holds.

For defenders: audit your Flex Objects installation for version 1.4.7 or later, but treat the patch as potentially narrow. Review whether any custom Flex object types you maintain inherit the same authorization shortcut. If your logging distinguishes between user updates issued through Grav's native admin interface versus this generic endpoint, monitor for that distinction — it may be the only anomaly signal for an attack that looks structurally identical to legitimate administrative work.
