Argument injection vulnerability in the telnet daemon (in.telnetd) in Solaris 10 and 11 (SunOS 5.10 and 5.11) misinterprets certain client "-f" sequences as valid requests for the login program to skip authentication, which allows remote attackers to log into certain accounts, as demonstrated by the bin account.

Apply vendor-supplied security patch from SunSolve (Solaris 10) or update to latest Solaris 11 support repository (Solaris 11)

  1. 1. Identify if the telnet service (in.telnetd) is running: svcs -a | grep telnet or ps -ef | grep in.telnetd
  2. 2. Disable the telnet service if not required: svcadm disable telnet (Solaris 11) or edit /etc/inetd.conf and kill -HUP the inetd process (Solaris 10)
  3. 3. If telnet is required, apply the vendor patch from SunSolve for this vulnerability
  4. 4. For Solaris 10: Obtain and install patch 120068-04 or later from sunsolve.sun.com
  5. 5. For Solaris 11: Run 'pkg update' to obtain the latest telnet-server package containing the fix
  6. 6. After patching, verify the fix by attempting to connect with -f option and confirm authentication is enforced
  7. 7. Restart the telnet service if it was disabled: svcadm enable telnet (Solaris 11)
