Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
A vulnerability has been identified in SINUMERIK 808D V4.7 (All versions), SINUMERIK 808D V4.8 (All versions), SINUMERIK 828D V4.7 (All versions < V4.7 SP6 HF1), SINUMERIK 840D sl V4.7 (All versions < V4.7 SP6 HF5), SINUMERIK 840D sl V4.8 (All versions < V4.8 SP3). A buffer overflow in the service command application could allow a local attacker to execute code with elevated privileges. The security vulnerability could be exploited by an attacker with local access to the affected systems. Successful exploitation requires user privileges but no user interaction. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to compromise confidentiality, integrity and availability of the system. At the time of advisory publication no public exploitation of this security vulnerability was known.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

dbcve analysis · high confidence

A buffer overflow vulnerability in the service command application on Siemens SINUMERIK CNC systems (808D, 828D, 840D sl) allows a local user with standard privileges to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges, potentially compromising system confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

MitigationApply Siemens security patches: update SINUMERIK 828D to V4.7 SP6 HF1 or later, 840D sl V4.7 to V4.7 SP6 HF5 or later, and 840D sl V4.8 to V4.8 SP3 or later. Restrict physical and local access to affected systems until patches are applied.

Am I affected? How to checkSteps we derive from the advisory and the affected-version data, so you can decide whether this CVE reaches your setup. They are a guide, not a scan — your own configuration is the authority.

dbcve checks

Work through these to decide whether this CVE applies to you.

  1. Identify the Sinumerik CNC model
    Access the system HMI or use system information screens to determine if the device is a Sinumerik 808D, 828D, or 840D sl model
    Affected if The model is not one of these three affected product lines
  2. Check the firmware version
    Navigate to system diagnostics or version information on the CNC HMI to obtain the installed firmware version (V4.7 or V4.8)
    Affected if The firmware version falls within the affected ranges: 808D V4.7 all versions, 808D V4.8 all versions, 828D V4.7 <=4.7, 840D sl V4.7 <=4.7, or 840D sl V4.8 <=4.8
  3. Verify the service command application is accessible
    Determine if the service command application or service mode functionality is available on the system, as this is the vulnerable component that must be present for exploitation
    Affected if The service command application is present and accessible to standard local users

A user is affected if they have a Sinumerik 808D, 828D, or 840D sl system running a firmware version within the specified ranges and the service command application is accessible on the system.
