Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
A vulnerability was found in Portainer before 1.20.0. Portainer stores LDAP credentials, corresponding to a master password, in cleartext and allows their retrieval via API calls.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

dbcve analysis
How this class of weakness works · CWE-522

Credentials are stored or transmitted without adequate protection, so an attacker who reaches them can reuse them directly. One weak link here can unravel an entire system. Remediation means strong hashing for stored secrets, encryption in transit, and never writing credentials to logs.

General guidance for the insufficiently protected credentials class — the official description and references above are authoritative for this specific CVE. Want a bespoke review and a reviewed fix? Ask our team →

Affected products & versions What the vendor confirmedThe version ranges the vendor confirmed as vulnerable. If your version sits inside a range here, treat yourself as exposed until you have upgraded.

Recommended fix High confidence

Portainer 1.20.0

  1. 1. Back up existing Portainer data and configuration before upgrading
  2. 2. Stop the running Portainer container: docker stop portainer
  3. 3. Pull the fixed Portainer image version 1.20.0: docker pull portainer/portainer:1.20.0
  4. 4. Remove the existing Portainer container (data volumes will be preserved): docker rm portainer
  5. 5. Start the new Portainer container with the same volume mounts: docker run -d --name portainer -p 9000:9000 -v /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock -v portainer_data:/data portainer/portainer:1.20.0
  6. 6. Verify the upgrade was successful by logging into the Portainer UI and checking the version
  7. 7. If using LDAP configuration, verify that credentials are no longer retrievable in cleartext via API
