This vulnerability allows network-adjacent attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of D-Link DIR-X3260 routers. Although authentication is required to exploit this vulnerability, the existing authentication mechanism can be bypassed. The specific flaw exists within the prog.cgi program, which handles HNAP requests made to the lighttpd webserver listening on TCP ports 80 and 443. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of a user-supplied string before using it to execute a system call. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of root. Was ZDI-CAN-21157.

D-Link DIR-X3260 Firmware 1.04b01 or later
- 1. Identify the current firmware version of the D-Link DIR-X3260 router by accessing the web management interface at http://192.168.0.1 or https://192.168.0.1 and navigating to Status > Firmware Upgrade
- 2. Navigate to the D-Link support page for the DIR-X3260 model at https://support.dlink.com/
- 3. Locate and download the latest firmware version. Based on the affected version range (< 1.04b01), obtain firmware version 1.04b01 or later from D-Link's official support downloads
- 4. Access the router's web interface, go to Tools > Firmware Upgrade (or similar location)
- 5. Upload the downloaded firmware file and allow the router to complete the upgrade process - do not power off the device during this operation
- 6. After the router reboots, verify the new firmware version is installed and confirm the upgrade was successful
- 7. As a security best practice following this RCE vulnerability, change the administrator password and review access controls
