Every so often pt->memory->ptrs is NULL. This ptrs ptr is set in the nv50_instobj_acquire called from nvkm_kmap. If Thread A and Thread B both get to nv50_instobj_acquire around the same time, and Thread A hits the refcount_set line, and in lockstep thread B succeeds at refcount_inc_not_zero, there is a chance the ptrs value won't have been stored since refcount_set is unordered. Force a memory barrier here, I picked smp_mb, since we want it on all CPUs and it's write followed by a read. v2: use paired smp_rmb/smp_wmb.

How this class of weakness works · CWE-362

Two operations that should be atomic can interleave, so an attacker who wins a narrow timing window reaches an inconsistent, exploitable state. These bugs are subtle and easy to miss in review. Fixing them properly means correct locking or atomic operations around the shared resource.

Kernel 5.15.157 or later (or 6.x stable), or Debian 11/12 with fixed kernel

  1. Identify the current kernel version using `uname -r`
  2. Check if the current version is affected: versions >= 4.15 and < 4.19.313, >= 4.20 and < 5.4.275, >= 5.5 and < 5.10.216, or >= 5.11 and < 5.15.157
  3. For Debian 10.0, check kernel version with `dpkg -l | grep linux-image`
  4. Upgrade to a fixed kernel version: 4.19.313 or later, 5.4.275 or later, 5.10.216 or later, 5.15.157 or later, or 6.x stable
  5. On Debian 10.0, consider upgrading to Debian 11/12 or use upstream kernel from backports.org
  6. Reboot the system after kernel upgrade to load the fixed nouveau driver
Caveat Upgrading kernel may require system reboot and could introduce compatibility issues with proprietary kernel modules or older drivers; nouveau is a free/open-source NVIDIA driver - ensure any NVIDIA-specific software is compatible
