CVE-2024-36004
Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.
NVD · uneditedIn the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: i40e: Do not use WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag for workqueue Issue reported by customer during SRIOV testing, call trace: When both i40e and the i40iw driver are loaded, a warning in check_flush_dependency is being triggered. This seems to be because of the i40e driver workqueue is allocated with the WQ_MEM_RECLAIM flag, and the i40iw one is not. Similar error was encountered on ice too and it was fixed by removing the flag. Do the same for i40e too. Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.
dbcve analysisA detailed technical summary for this CVE is being prepared.

Remediation Closing itWhat it takes to close this. Where a vendor fix exists we point at it; where none exists we say so plainly, and can build one. Effort estimates are scoped from the advisory, not from your codebase.
dbcve · scoped4.19.3135.4.2755.10.216
Linux kernel >= 4.19.313 (for 4.14-4.19.x branch), >= 5.4.275 (for 4.20-5.4.x branch), >= 5.10.216 (for 5.5-5.10.x branch), or >= 5.15.158 (for 5.11-5.15.x branch); Debian 10 (buster) with subsequent kernel updates
- Identify the current running kernel version using 'uname -r'
- Determine which kernel branch your version falls into from the affected ranges: 4.14-4.19.313, 4.20-5.4.275, 5.5-5.10.216, or 5.11-5.15.158
- Upgrade to a kernel version at or above the first fixed version in your branch: 4.19.313, 5.4.275, 5.10.216, or 5.15.158 respectively
- For Debian 10.0, apply vendor security updates to get a patched kernel package
- Reboot the system into the updated kernel
- Verify the fix is applied by checking that the workqueue warning no longer appears in dmesg when loading both i40e and i40iw/irdma drivers

The advisory tells you what broke. It rarely tells you what actually worked. If you’ve dealt with this one, that detail is what the next engineer is searching for.
- The version that genuinely resolved it — not the one the vendor claimed
- A config change or rule that shut the vector down
- A gotcha in the upgrade path that cost you an afternoon
