CVE-2024-36009
Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.
NVD · uneditedIn the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ax25: Fix netdev refcount issue The dev_tracker is added to ax25_cb in ax25_bind(). When the ax25 device is detaching, the dev_tracker of ax25_cb should be deallocated in ax25_kill_by_device() instead of the dev_tracker of ax25_dev. The log reported by ref_tracker is shown below: [ 80.884935] ref_tracker: reference already released. Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Remediation Closing itWhat it takes to close this. Where a vendor fix exists we point at it; where none exists we say so plainly, and can build one. Effort estimates are scoped from the advisory, not from your codebase.
dbcve · scoped4.154.205.5
Upgrade to kernel 4.15+ (if on 4.14.x), 4.20+ (if on 4.19.x), 5.5+ (if on 5.4.x), or 5.11+ (if on 5.10.x)
- Identify the currently running Linux kernel version using `uname -r`
- Determine which major kernel release branch your version belongs to (e.g., 4.14, 4.19, 5.4, 5.10)
- Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version that includes the fix: for 4.14.x branch upgrade to 4.15 or later; for 4.19.x upgrade to 4.20 or later; for 5.4.x upgrade to 5.5 or later; for 5.10.x upgrade to 5.11 or later
- After kernel upgrade, reboot the system to load the fixed kernel
- Verify the fix is applied by checking the kernel version and confirming the ax25 module loads without ref_tracker errors

The advisory tells you what broke. It rarely tells you what actually worked. If you’ve dealt with this one, that detail is what the next engineer is searching for.
- The version that genuinely resolved it — not the one the vendor claimed
- A config change or rule that shut the vector down
- A gotcha in the upgrade path that cost you an afternoon
