If the mptcp worker (dumbly) tries mptcp-level re-injection after such ack, that would unconditionally trigger a send buffer cleanup using 'bad' snd_una values. We could easily disable re-injection for fallback sockets, but such dumb behavior already helped catching a few subtle issues and a very low to zero impact in practice. Instead address the issue always initializing snd_nxt (and write_seq, for consistency) at connect time.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Recommended fix High confidence

Upgrade to the next stable kernel release in your current major version branch that contains the fix (5.10.218+, 5.15.159+, 6.1.91+, or 6.6.31+)

  1. Identify the currently running kernel version using 'uname -r'
  2. For systems running kernel 5.9.x through 5.10.x: upgrade to kernel 5.10.218 or later but below 5.11
  3. For systems running kernel 5.11.x through 5.15.x: upgrade to kernel 5.15.159 or later but below 5.16
  4. For systems running kernel 5.16.x through 6.1.x: upgrade to kernel 6.1.91 or later but below 6.2
  5. For systems running kernel 6.2.x through 6.6.x: upgrade to kernel 6.6.31 or later but below 6.7
  6. For Debian 10 (Buster) systems: apply Debian kernel security updates that include this fix, or upgrade to Debian 11/12 which ship with fixed kernels
  7. Reboot the system after applying the kernel update
Caveat Kernel upgrades typically require system downtime for reboot; ensure compatibility of other software with the newer kernel before upgrading in production environments

We can perform the upgrade in your staging environment and verify nothing breaks — typical engagement from $1,600. Get the upgrade done
