CVE-2024-40904
Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.
NVD · uneditedIn the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: USB: class: cdc-wdm: Fix CPU lockup caused by excessive log messages The syzbot fuzzer found that the interrupt-URB completion callback in the cdc-wdm driver was taking too long, and the driver's immediate resubmission of interrupt URBs with -EPROTO status combined with the dummy-hcd emulation to cause a CPU lockup: cdc_wdm 1-1:1.0: nonzero urb status received: -71 cdc_wdm 1-1:1.0: wdm_int_callback - 0 bytes watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 26s! In any case, the best approach for preventing these lockups and to avoid spamming the log with thousands of error messages per second is to ratelimit the two dev_err() calls. Therefore we replace them with dev_err_ratelimited().
Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Remediation Closing itWhat it takes to close this. Where a vendor fix exists we point at it; where none exists we say so plainly, and can build one. Effort estimates are scoped from the advisory, not from your codebase.
dbcve · scoped4.19.3175.4.2795.10.221
4.19.317, 5.4.279, 5.10.221, or 5.15.162 (or later stable release in your branch)
- Identify the currently running Linux kernel version using `uname -r`
- Determine which version branch your kernel falls into based on the affected ranges: 4.19.x, 5.4.x, 5.10.x, or 5.15.x
- Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version that includes the fix: 4.19.317+, 5.4.279+, 5.10.221+, or 5.15.162+
- Reboot the system to load the new kernel
- Verify the fix is applied by checking the kernel version with `uname -r`

The advisory tells you what broke. It rarely tells you what actually worked. If you’ve dealt with this one, that detail is what the next engineer is searching for.
- The version that genuinely resolved it — not the one the vendor claimed
- A config change or rule that shut the vector down
- A gotcha in the upgrade path that cost you an afternoon
