CVE-2024-41041
Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.
NVD · uneditedIn the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: udp: Set SOCK_RCU_FREE earlier in udp_lib_get_port(). syzkaller triggered the warning [0] in udp_v4_early_demux(). In udp_v[46]_early_demux() and sk_lookup(), we do not touch the refcount of the looked-up sk and use sock_pfree() as skb->destructor, so we check SOCK_RCU_FREE to ensure that the sk is safe to access during the RCU grace period. Currently, SOCK_RCU_FREE is flagged for a bound socket after being put into the hash table. Moreover, the SOCK_RCU_FREE check is done too early in udp_v[46]_early_demux() and sk_lookup(), so there could be a small race window: CPU1 CPU2 ---- ---- udp_v4_early_demux() udp_lib_get_port() | |- hlist_add_head_rcu() |- sk = __udp4_lib_demux_lookup() | |- DEBUG_NET_WARN_ON_ONCE(sk_is_refcounted(sk)); `- sock_set_flag(sk, SOCK_RCU_FREE) We had the same bug in TCP and fixed it in commit 871019b22d1b ("net: set SOCK_RCU_FREE before inserting socket into hashtable"). Let's apply the same fix for UDP. Remediation Closing itWhat it takes to close this. Where a vendor fix exists we point at it; where none exists we say so plainly, and can build one. Effort estimates are scoped from the advisory, not from your codebase.

Upgrade to kernel >= 5.4.280, >= 5.10.222, >= 5.15.163, or >= 6.1.100 (depending on your branch)
- Identify the currently running kernel version using 'uname -r'
- Determine which version branch your kernel belongs to (e.g., 5.15.x, 6.1.x)
- Upgrade to the first fixed version for your branch: for 5.4.x upgrade to >= 5.4.280, for 5.10.x upgrade to >= 5.10.222, for 5.15.x upgrade to >= 5.15.163, for 6.1.x upgrade to >= 6.1.100
- Alternatively, apply the upstream patch commit 20ceae10623c3b29fdf7609690849475bcdebdb0 to your kernel source and rebuild
- Reboot into the patched kernel

The advisory tells you what broke. It rarely tells you what actually worked. If you’ve dealt with this one, that detail is what the next engineer is searching for.
- The version that genuinely resolved it — not the one the vendor claimed
- A config change or rule that shut the vector down
- A gotcha in the upgrade path that cost you an afternoon
