CVE-2024-42224
Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.
NVD · uneditedIn the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: dsa: mv88e6xxx: Correct check for empty list Since commit a3c53be55c95 ("net: dsa: mv88e6xxx: Support multiple MDIO busses") mv88e6xxx_default_mdio_bus() has checked that the return value of list_first_entry() is non-NULL. This appears to be intended to guard against the list chip->mdios being empty. However, it is not the correct check as the implementation of list_first_entry is not designed to return NULL for empty lists. Instead, use list_first_entry_or_null() which does return NULL if the list is empty. Flagged by Smatch. Compile tested only.
Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Remediation Closing itWhat it takes to close this. Where a vendor fix exists we point at it; where none exists we say so plainly, and can build one. Effort estimates are scoped from the advisory, not from your codebase.

Upgrade to kernel version >=4.19.318, >=5.4.280, >=5.10.222, or >=5.15.163 (or later stable release)
- Identify the currently running Linux kernel version using 'uname -r'
- Determine which version branch the system is on (e.g., 4.19.x, 5.4.x, 5.10.x, 5.15.x)
- Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version that includes the fix: for 4.19 branch use >=4.19.318, for 5.4 branch use >=5.4.280, for 5.10 branch use >=5.10.222, for 5.15 branch use >=5.15.163
- After kernel upgrade, reboot the system to load the patched kernel
- Verify the fix is applied by checking the mv88e6xxx driver code or checking the kernel version

The advisory tells you what broke. It rarely tells you what actually worked. If you’ve dealt with this one, that detail is what the next engineer is searching for.
- The version that genuinely resolved it — not the one the vendor claimed
- A config change or rule that shut the vector down
- A gotcha in the upgrade path that cost you an afternoon
