Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.13, an unauthenticated user who tricks another user into visiting a malicious web page could run unauthorized JavaScript in that user's browser. This could allow for unauthorized access to all relevant data available to that user and actions that affect system integrity. The Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) is possible because Splunk Web does not validate the origin and source of messages received by a page message handler. The vulnerability requires the attacker to phish the affected user by tricking them into initiating a request within their browser. The unauthenticated user should not be able to exploit the vulnerability at will.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

How this class of weakness works · CWE-79

Untrusted input is placed into a web page without being neutralised, so an attacker's markup or script executes in another user's browser. That can hijack sessions, capture keystrokes, or silently perform actions as the victim. Fixing it properly means context-aware output encoding everywhere data meets HTML, backed by a content-security policy as a second line of defence.

Upgrade to Splunk Enterprise 10.4.2 (or 10.2.6, 10.0.9, or 9.4.13 or later)

  1. 1. Identify the current Splunk Enterprise version by navigating to Settings > About > Version in the Splunk web interface, or running `splunk --version` from the command line.
  2. 2. Determine the appropriate upgrade path based on your current major version (9.x, 10.0.x, 10.1.x, or 10.2.x).
  3. 3. Review Splunk Upgrade Planning documentation and release notes for the target version to understand any prerequisites.
  4. 4. Back up your Splunk configuration directory (typically $SPLUNK_HOME/etc/) and any critical indexes.
  5. 5. Download the target fixed version installer from splunk.com (10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, or 9.4.13 or later).
  6. 6. For single-instance deployments: Stop Splunk (`splunk stop`), run the installer, and restart (`splunk start`).
  7. 7. For distributed deployments: Upgrade the cluster manager/head first, then the search heads, then the indexers, following Splunk's rolling upgrade procedures.
  8. 8. After upgrade, verify the Splunk Web message handler is properly validating origins by testing that reflected XSS is no longer possible.
Caveat Review Splunk release notes for the target version—major upgrades may require migration steps; custom apps may need compatibility testing; some configuration changes may be needed.
