Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.

NVD · unedited
In Splunk Enterprise versions below 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, and 9.4.14, a user who does not hold the "admin" or "power" Splunk roles could write dispatch metadata to an arbitrary location on the host by supplying a crafted search identifier to a Representational State Transfer (REST) API endpoint and affect system integrity on the host. The vulnerability is possible because Splunk Enterprise does not validate the search identifier before using it to create a dispatch directory. For more information see About configuring role-based user access (https://help.splunk.com/en/splunk-enterprise/administer/manage-users-and-security/10.2/manage-splunk-platform-users-and-roles/about-configuring-role-based-user-access) in the Splunk documentation.

Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.

Recommended fix High confidence

10.4.2 (or 10.2.6, 10.0.9, or 9.4.14 depending on your compatibility requirements)

  1. Review Splunk Enterprise upgrade documentation for your current version
  2. Create a complete backup of your Splunk environment including configuration files and indexes
  3. Test the upgrade in a non-production environment first to verify compatibility with your custom apps and configurations
  4. Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to version 10.4.2, 10.2.6, 10.0.9, or 9.4.14 (whichever is compatible with your deployment)
  5. After upgrade, verify the REST API endpoint properly validates search identifiers
  6. Confirm dispatch directories are created only in the expected system location
Caveat Splunk upgrades may require changes to custom apps or configurations; always test in staging first
