CVE-2017-12329
Official description Straight from the sourceThe vendor's or NVD's own wording, published unedited. Authoritative, but often terse — it says what broke, rarely what to do.
NVD · uneditedA vulnerability in the CLI of Cisco Firepower Extensible Operating System (FXOS) and NX-OS System Software could allow an authenticated, local attacker to perform a command injection attack. The vulnerability is due to insufficient input validation of command arguments to the CLI parser. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by injecting crafted command arguments into a vulnerable CLI command. An exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands at the user's privilege level. On products that support multiple virtual device contexts (VDCs), this vulnerability could allow the attacker to execute commands at the user's privilege level outside the user's environment. This vulnerability affects the following products running Cisco FXOS or NX-OS System Software: Firepower 4100 Series Next-Generation Firewall, Firepower 9300 Security Appliance, Multilayer Director Switches, Nexus 1000V Series Switches, Nexus 2000 Series Fabric Extenders, Nexus 3000 Series Switches, Nexus 3500 Platform Switches, Nexus 5000 Series Switches, Nexus 5500 Platform Switches, Nexus 5600 Platform Switches, Nexus 6000 Series Switches, Nexus 7000 Series Switches, Nexus 7700 Series Switches, Nexus 9000 Series Switches in standalone NX-OS mode, Nexus 9500 R-Series Line Cards and Fabric Modules, Unified Computing System Manager. Cisco Bug IDs: CSCve51700, CSCve93833, CSCve93860, CSCve93863, CSCve93864, CSCve93880.
Technical summary Written by usOur analysis, written from the advisory, the CVSS vector and the affected-version data. It adds context the advisory leaves out, and never invents facts that are not in the source.
dbcve analysis · high confidenceA command injection vulnerability in the CLI parser of Cisco FXOS and NX-OS System Software allows an authenticated local attacker to inject crafted command arguments due to insufficient input validation. Am I affected? How to checkSteps we derive from the advisory and the affected-version data, so you can decide whether this CVE reaches your setup. They are a guide, not a scan — your own configuration is the authority.
dbcve checksWork through these to decide whether this CVE applies to you.
-
Identify the installed product and versionRun 'show version' on NX-OS or 'show fxos version' on Firepower/FXOS appliances to obtain the software versionAffected if The version matches any of these: Cisco NX-OS 5.2(1)sv3(2.8), 8.0(1), 8.1(0)bd(0.20), 8.1(0.2)s0; Cisco UCS 7.0(0)hsk(0.357); or any version of Cisco Firepower Extensible Operating System (FXOS)
-
Confirm CLI access is availableVerify you can access the CLI shell via console, SSH, ortelnet by attempting to log inAffected if CLI access is enabled and you have valid authentication credentials
-
Check for untrusted local user accountsRun 'show users' or 'show running-config' to list configured local accounts and recent login sessionsAffected if There are local user accounts beyond the intended administrators, or sessions from untrusted source IP addresses exist
-
Identify privilege level of your accountAfter logging into the CLI, run 'show privilege' or check your current prompt levelAffected if Your account operates at any privilege level (including user mode) since the vulnerability allows command injection at the user's current privilege level
You are affected if you run any of the specific NX-OS versions listed, UCS 7.0(0)hsk(0.357), or any version of Firepower FXOS, and your CLI is accessible to untrusted authenticated local users.

The advisory tells you what broke. It rarely tells you what actually worked. If you’ve dealt with this one, that detail is what the next engineer is searching for.
- The version that genuinely resolved it — not the one the vendor claimed
- A config change or rule that shut the vector down
- A gotcha in the upgrade path that cost you an afternoon
